Foreign Rituals

Maeve beckoned us into the great room of the manor and waved her hands. Light sprung before her, and there was a vibrant flash. Suddenly the gruesome scene from moments before had vanished from the entryway, and there were elaborate decorations everywhere. Instantly I found myself clothed in a white gown and Lazlo in elegant formal wear. Maeve’s magic moved him across the room, away from me.

I felt panic scrambling in my brain. When I’d said yes, I hadn’t been thinking right now. I shoved it aside. We’d get through this; we’d find a way to free Maeve and dismantle the gate. We’d do it together. I’d deal with this whole marriage thing.

There were ethereal forms, some more solid than others, all present, some sitting in chairs, others standing by. A ghostly priest was at the front, standing next to Lazlo.

This was far more magic than I’d ever seen at once in my life. The power and knowledge required to do this were off the charts. Maeve was more formidable than anyone I’d ever seen. I heard her in a chair in the front row speaking to a spirit.

“After all these years, finally he’s getting married,” she said, offering the ghost a tissue. The tissue dropped to the floor, and the spirit pretended to weep. ‘Yes, I know, you always cried at weddings,” Maeve said to the spirit.

Music was playing, and my feet moved as if on their own up the aisle. I wanted to resist. I desperately wanted to run. This whole scene was so insane. Before I could come to terms with it I was face to face with Lazlo, and the ghostly priest connected our hands. As he began the ceremony, his words evaporated as Lazlo and I locked eyes. I found he was inside my head.

“Don’t flinch or let on that you can hear me. She was here when I returned. She opened the gateway, and most of the ancestors are loose, although she has kept them here on the grounds. This is the only safe way for us to communicate. Blink twice if Ana is coming”

I blinked twice; after all, she had said she was coming, but I hadn’t a clue where she was.

Lazlo silenced his thoughts as the priest addressed us, and it became necessary for us to play our parts in the ceremony, reciting the vows he gave us. When he pronounced us married, Lazlo pulled me into him and kissed me gently and tenderly, almost apologetically. I felt a delicate chain and the weight of a small stone materialize around my neck. I brought a finger to it and whispered a spell to hide its presence.

Maeve stood up and applauded. It was the oddest wedding I’d ever seen, and it was mine. Oddly, that seemed as logical as it was terrifying.

Maeve greeted us at the end of the aisle as we walked out. “Congratulations, you two. Oh, such a relief!” She placed a hand on Lazlo’s shoulder. “You are finally married, and to the sweet girl you wanted all those years ago.
